Nutravae’s nutrition system is the source. AI helps you access it. Every recommendation comes from Nutravae’s own clinical-nutrition knowledge base and safety engine — never invented by AI, and never pulled from the open internet. Nutravae is a clinical-nutrition platform powered by AI, not an AI chatbot giving nutrition advice.
What AI does — and what it does not
AI helps: it finds the relevant evidence in Nutravae’s library, matches it to your profile, and explains it in plain language.
AI does not: invent recommendations, override your safety rules (allergies, medications, labs), or use the open internet. Every recommendation is checked against your conditions, allergies, medications, labs and goals and traces back to its sources.
Which features use AI
Uses AI: meal photos (recognizing foods & portions), menu scanning, receipt scanning, nutrition-label reading, “describe a meal” estimates, and AI-assisted Barometer answers.
Works without AI: your fridge & food log, barcode lookup, the evidence library and Barometer library answers, recipes, menus and your profile, and on-device label & lab reading.
Your AI key, and what is sent
AI features run on your own Gemini API key, stored only on your device inside your encrypted vault. Most AI requests send only what you point the AI at — a menu, receipt, or label photo, a lab-report image, a meal you typed, or a question you asked. Your stored profile — conditions, allergies, medications, laboratory values, and history — is never sent to the AI provider.
One personalization exception: for AI-assisted Barometer answers, your goals and conditions are included with your question so the answer is about you. You can switch the Barometer to Eco or Library-only so that only the question is sent, or no question is ever sent to AI automatically.
Lab reports
A lab report holds health data. If AI reads it, the report image is sent to Google’s Gemini API, and on Google’s free tier those images may be retained and reviewed by people to improve Google’s own models; a paid tier avoids this. You can keep lab reading on-device only so that no lab image is ever sent to AI, while still using AI for menus, receipts and labels.
Accuracy
AI-generated content is educational only — verify important information. AI can misread text and misidentify foods, so check results before relying on them. AI only transcribes what is on an image; Nutravae’s clinical engine does the interpreting, and every value is checked against Nutravae’s own food-composition database and evidence library.
